Calculating Remaining Duration

by | May 5, 2023 | Blogs | 0 comments

When evaluating remaining durations, the rules for updating actual dates should be reviewed. Basically, every start and finish date before (to the left of) the data date should be an actual date; and there should be no actual dates after (to the right of) the data date. If the scheduling software does not enforce these rules, then error filters should be created to highlight these conditions for correction prior to estimating remaining durations. It is also recommended that the entry of actual dates be validated and not assumed to occur as planned.

If no other information is available to the scheduler one alternative is to use a variation to the Blinders Method. This method assumes a straight line progress.
1. IF: data date (DD) – the actual start of the activity (AS) < original duration (OD), THEN: remaining duration (RD) =OD - (DD - AS)

Example:

OD = 5 days
DD = 2023-04-30
AS = 2023-04-29
RD = 5 – (2023-04-30 – 2023-04-29)
RD = 5 – 1
RD = 4 days

2. IF: DD – AS > OD,
THEN: RD = 1, but should be re-assessed.

Example:

OD = 5 days
DD = 2023-04-30
AS = 2023-04-20
2023-04-30 – 2023-04-20 = 10
10 > 5, Therefore RD = 1 day or should be re-assessed

3. If an AS date is missing and a valid actual finish of the activity (AF) date is given, remaining durations and percent completes are ignored and the revised activity duration is determined on the basis of the AF and the specified duration (original duration is assumed as actual duration).

4. If AS and AF dates are missing, the revised activity duration is determined on the basis of the remaining duration and percent complete.
