Planning and Scheduling are distinct but inseparable aspects of managing a successful project. Planning should always be done before Scheduling. Planning defines what to do & how to do the project. However, Scheduling defines when and who will do the project.
Construction Planning focuses on the bigger picture of the project. It involves identifying all the required steps and methodologies to build a structure. It determines all the necessary materials, equipment and manpower needed in actual construction. A Construction Planner is like a detective that begins with a result and must study the steps to have a good result.
Scheduling is the process of converting a general or outline plan for a projects into a time based graphic presentation using its resources and time constraints. It enable us to integrate all the activities to record, communicate and assign each tasks and work loads by various contributors. It also enable us to analyze and forecast procurement of resources like materials, equipment and manpower to maintain or limit cost overruns. Scheduling measures progress and performance of the project. It provide a visible summary of major and important activities. It provide the team a warning system to avoid delays.
